Moving advice needed; St. James Atlantic — Brooklynian

Moving advice needed; St. James Atlantic

Hi everyone,

I'm about to sign a lease for a place at St. James & Atlantic. The apartment is beautiful and seems like a great deal, but can anyone who lives around there tell me about the area? I'm a single woman and wondering about safety issues--i.e. is the late-night walk from the subway creepy? Is the area noisy at night? And, more positively, any recommended places for grocery shopping, eating, etc., right around there?

Am super excited to be moving into the area, but would love some info from people who already live there.

Thanks!

    Hi,
We're just a few blocks away from where you are. We enjoy the Dean St. Tavern pretty much just across Atlantic Ave from you (on Underhill, really in Prospect Heights.) Also you're close to Kush on Putnam near Grand.

In terms of safety, there are some things to watch but Atlantic Ave is always pretty busy and I think you should be fine. Of course, even in the "best" of neighborhoods there's never any guarantees of safety. Normal alertness should keep you fine.
  • Hi. We are moving to Grand and Gates, just north of Atlantic, and I have the same concerns. Although my husband and I will be living there, I will often be coming and going alone at night. Let me know how it goes. The apts are great, and I think the neighborhood will continue to shift.

Good luck and be in touch,
    Kaz
  • you might also want to consider joining the block association. you are just off lefferts there and there is a strong lefferts block association that meets the first wed of every month at outpost cafe (on fulton between classon and grand).

the st. james end of the street is quite quiet and very nice. you are conveniently located between p heights and the up and coming fulton street (they are redoing the streets and sidewalks out to bedford - past bedford after that - in hopes of rejuvenating the commercial life).

i have put together a lot of information about the area on a blog that i do: eatingclintonhil.blogspot.com, which may be of use. i have to add the lovely new brown betty cafe on grand and fulton.

if you have specific questions, please feel free to ask.
  • I live just a block away on the corner of Washington and Atlantic and I avoid Atlantic whenever possible (mainly because its dirty and ugly, not unsafe), but I don't really worry coming home at night from the subway on Fulton. Fulton itself is slightly sketchy between Washington and St. James at night, but I don't think its actually unsafe.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

I live on the same corner. The neighborhood is definitely changing - you just have to be aware of where and when you're walking. Which building are you moving into?

Thanks for everyone's replies; I moved in a couple of days ago (right on the corner of St. James & Atlantic) and so far, all is great. Any good places to grab coffee/breakfast/lunch right around here?
  • Subject: coffee

For coffee and a fun environment, there's Outpost. They're on fulton between grand and classon aves. Probably the best coffee around. They also are a bar/lounge at night. Kush Cafe has great food and is reasonably priced. they're on putnam at grand street.
  • also friendly yummy new place at grand and fulton - brown betty cafe. good coffee and food, they do a lot of their own baking on site. (outpost and kush are wonderful too). on a nice evening you are an easy walk from dakar (restaurant), choice (cafe) and 255 grand (bar) all at grand and lafayette. And of course the busy dekalb restaurant row, I and others have compiled a map and blog of shops and (mostly) food.

anyone on the boards that hasn't contributed, please add comments to my ongoing map of places in the neighborhood: http://www.communitywalk.com/map/2616 or to my blog eatingclintonhill.blogspot.com

    enjoy the neighborhood!
